Cumberland is the county seat of Allegany County, set in a valley of the Allegheny Mountains along the North Branch of the Potomac River. It is the western end of the C&O Canal towpath and connects to the Great Allegheny Passage trail toward Pittsburgh.
I-68 runs through the city, and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad departs from its downtown. The Washington Street Historic District features large 19th-century homes, and much of the city's housing is older single-family homes on hilly streets.
